About the race:

Air racing has been part of the history of the 99's since 1929, first with The Women's Air Derby. Later came The All Women's Transcontinental Air Race, which eventually led to the Air Race Classic that thrives today.

The NW section has been without a local women's air race after The Palms to Pines ceased in 2009.  Missing the excitement, camaraderie and yes, a little of the competition, the NW section of the 99's decided to revive the air race in a less expensive, less intimidating style than the existing cross country air races.

The format of the race is perfect for first time racers, students building time, and experienced pilots who need a different reason to fly.  Pilots will begin the 160NM loop course at Troutdale. Flights proceed along the South bank of the Columbia through the Gorge over Hood River, The Dalles, Wasco and Goldendale and back to Troutdale along the North bank.  Monitors will be posted on the ground  to avoid corner cutting. Planes will be grouped by class. Faster planes departing first.

Instead of making it a women's only event, the mandatory "every woman in a plane" is meant to encourage local women pilots without excluding the male partners they may feel most comfortable flying with.  And what is competition without prizes?  There will be medals for participants and winners.  Prizes will be awarded to those participating in the estimated fuel burn and estimated time en route option.

Proceeds from the race will go to the 99'S NW section scholarship fund and the 99's International Endowment fund.
